Description   Vitamin E - 1,250 I.U. per ounce, Selenium - 1.03 mg. per ounce Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant and is given increasing importance in the horses diet each year. Selenium deficiency results in muscular dystrophy. The muscles become very pale, and the disease is often referred to as white muscle disease. Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant. Halter breaking, transporting and weaning are periods when higher levels can prove beneficial. Studies are now also proving higher levels of Vitamin E are needed during lactation and the last trimester of a mare's pregnancy as it improves colostrum thus helping to improve the foal's immune system. Vitamin E is also known to improve the breeding stallions sperm count and increase stamina during the breeding season. Horses in heavy work would benefit from the addition of Vitamin E especially late in the season where over training is an issue. Selenium and Vitamin E function in a partnership, which helps protect body tissues from free-radical damage that occurs during oxidation (the conversion of food stuffs into energy). Feed in areas where the soil is deficient in Selenium. A crumble base consisting of alfalfa and corn meal.
